Until the arrival of this researcher, the most accepted current was the one that defended that emotions were social constructions, and that since they had no biological basis, they depended to a great extent on the society in which each person lived. Paul Ekman is best known for his influential version of basic emotions theory —a perspective that defines emotions as evolved, distinct, and functional responses to a small number of universal adaptive challenges faced by humans’ primate ancestors. For example, fear is defined as an Ekman transport, part of Ekman motion theory first investigated in 1902 by Vagn Walfrid Ekman, is the term given for the 90° net transport of the surface layer (the layer affected by wind) by wind forcing. This phenomenon was first noted by Fridtjof Nansen, who recorded that ice transport appeared to occur at an angle to the wind direction during his Arctic expedition during the 1890s. Ekman’s research was based on how human traits, emotions and deception developed over time through empirical research. He negated the belief of anthropologists such as Margaret Mead who implied that facial expressions are determined culturally but instead remained forthright on the fact that it is developed universally and is biological in origin. Excerpted from Paul Ekman’s introduction to Part III of Exploring Affect, edited by Virginia Demos. Silvan Tomkins deserves much of the credit for the renewed interest in facial expression which has developed in the last two decades.
