The cyclic prefix (CP) of OFDM provides two benefits: It inhibits ISI between subsequent OFDM symbols. It turns linear convolution into circular convolution with the FFT window. Only circular convolution allows to apply the convolution theorem and use the single-tap equalizer. • Orthogonality of carriers is lost when multipath channels are involved, which can be restored by cyclic prefix.
